Vietnam: Arriving Ho Chi Minh City! Hello Saigon!

It has been two decades since Vietnam was reunited; a remarkable progress has been done. Vietnam now is one of the stunning travel destinations in Asia.

To complete my ASEAN trip, I need to leave a footprint in this gracious and graceful country. I booked a flight thru Vietnam airlines and landed safely in Tan Son Nat International airport in Ho Chi Minh City. After doing the immigration thing, I looked for a telco store and got my Vietnamese sim card. I asked the store lady to set-up my 3G.

Next thing, I needed to set-up my Uber using my Vietnam mobile number so I can have my first free ride. There are many horror stories in hailing a taxicab in Vietnam due to these scammers. So I chose Uber then.

I arrived safely in Saigon Youth Hostel. The streets in District 1 are already so alive. Everybody’s partying. How I wish I can join them but I have fixed my mind already that I need to have a rest. I would be leaving for Mui Ne early morning the following day.

Now comes the one of the horror stories in booking a backpacker hostel. The hostel guy told me they’re full and have me sent to the other hostel. Damn! Why the hell I was able to book in Agoda? This is a common story though to backpackers so I easily accepted the situation.

I moved to Saigon Backpackers Hotel which is still in District 1 but quite far from the center. It is at the back of Thai Binh market which is at the end part of Pham Ngu Lao. But this end part in on the other side, not the one near Ben Thanh market.

Finally, got checked-in. Saigon Backpackers Hotel is actually more expensive than the one I booked so basically I was not scammed. I just hate the idea of these hostels that still accept customers even though somebody already booked. It usually happened when to check-in late. But in may case I already informed them that I would be having a late check-out.

Anyway, after settling down. I went out and buy some thing to fill my thirst. There was a minibar though in my room and the drinks are quite cheap but I still opted to go out and found a convenience store. I got my Saigon beer to knock me down. Lights off.
