Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod in Cebu City

When SM Prime Hodings Inc. decided to build a compound of structures to be known as SM Seaside City in South Reclamation Area in Cebu City, they first built this modern chapel dedicated to the second Filipino saint and the first Visayan saint, San Pedro Calungsod.

The chapel was designed by US-based architect Carlos Arnaiz. The design is inspired by ecclesiastical architecture wherein light and structure work together to make it contemporary, futuristic and contextual. The chapel consists of 100 walls of different height and width. The walls represent the different walks of life. They are formed together to form as a congregation.

The chapel has its own spaces for baptistry, adoration chapel, sacristy, stations of the cross and even a quiet room for kids. The chapel also has a multipurpose hall located in the lower ground floor. The chapel sits in an elevated 5,001 square meter lot and can accommodate 803 people.

San Pedro Calungsod, who is considered a role model for the youth, was martyred in Guam for his missionary work in 1672. He was beatified on March 5, 2000 by Blessed Pope John Paul II and was then canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City last Oct. 21, 2012.
